Madras School of Social Work, established in 1952, is located in Chennai, South India, and is an autonomous college affiliated to the University of Madras. The School offers various under-graduate and graduate courses in social sciences.
The Madras School of Social Work was founded by the well known Social Worker Mary Clubwala Jadhav and is run under the aegis of the Society for Social Education and Research, Chennai.
The Madras School of Social Work is a member of the Association of Schools of Social Work in India and the Asian Pacific Association of Social Work Education. The School is also affiliated to the International Association of Schools of Social Work.
The College offers MSW, MSc Counselling and Guidance, MHRM, BSW and M.Phil / PhD programmes affiliated to the University of Madras. The part-time PGDPMIR and full-time ISMS Diploma programmes are instituted by the Society under its own constitution.
1. MASTER OF SOCIAL WORK (MSW) Aided & Self-Financed(8 am to 1 pm)
The objective of this course is to prepare candidates for a career in social work through a professional training programme. The course is a two-year full time programme covering four semesters. The foundation course comprises theory in social work, research methodology and applications that support the understanding of core courses. Besides these four areas of specializations are also offered, viz.
• Community Development and Empowerment • Social work with Families • Medical and Psychiatric Social Work • Human Resource Management
Admission
Candidate should have a Bachelor’s Degree preferably in Arts, Science or Commerce of the University of Madras or of any other University accepted as equivalent by the University of Madras. Working knowledge of Tamil to enable the candidate to do effective field practicum is essential.Admission will be based on merit taking into account marks secured in degree course, entrance test, group discussion and interview. Community quota allotments will be as per TN Government Rules. A student may opt for any one of the fields of specialization. No change in the field of specialization will be permitted after admission.
2. MASTER OF SCIENCE (M.Sc. Counselling Psychology) Shift II – 2 pm to 7 pm
The Master of Science program in Counseling Psychology is an intensive two-year full-time course which is a combination of class-room instruction, field practice and research. The course is designed to prepare young men and women to work as psychological counselors in various agencies like Government, NGO and private practice. The course covers research methodology, counseling theory and skills, work place counseling, health psychology, children with special needs, behaviour modification besides psychological assessment.The course duration is two years consisting of four semesters.
Admission
A candidate who has passed B.A / B.Sc Psychology Degree examination or any of the following subjects, Bachelor of Social Work, BA Sociology, BSc Home Science/ Human Development/ Child Development, BA Philosophy and B. Ed, either from University of Madras or from other Universities accepted by the University of Madras as equivalent thereto shall be eligible for admission to this course.Admission will be based on aptitude and merit, taking into account marks obtained in degree course and performance in test and interview.
3. MASTER OF ARTS IN HUMAN RESOURCE MANAGEMENT (MHRM) Shift II 2 pm to 7 pm
This programme is an intensive two-year full-time course which is a combination of class-room instruction, practical training and research. The course is mostly designed to prepare young men and women as HR Managers in both Government and private enterprises. The course covers HR related areas and other functional areas like marketing management, management accounting, financial management and quality improvement processes.The course duration is two years consisting of four semesters.

A candidate who has passed Bachelor’s Degree in any discipline from University of Madras or from other universities accepted by the University as equivalent thereto is eligible for admission to this course.Admission will be based on aptitude and merit taking into account marks obtained in Degree course and performance in entrance test, group discussion and interview.
4. BACHELOR IN SOCIAL WORK (BSW) Shift I - 8 am to 1 pm
The three-year Bachelor’s Programme in Social work is an intensive course with theory and field practice. The uniqueness of this programme is that the students are exposed to intensive experiential learning. The allied papers offered, Sociology and Psychology, will enable the graduates to move easily into other post-graduate courses.The course extends over three years covering six semesters. The course of study consists of : Foundation Course- Language: Tamil / French, Part II – English, Core Courses consisting of Main subjects, allied subjects, application oriented subjects and practical.
Admission
For admission into the BSW programme, the candidate should have passed the Higher Secondary Examination conducted by the Government of Tamil Nadu or an examination accepted as equivalent thereof by the Madras University. Working knowledge of Tamil to enable the candidate to do effective field practicum is essential.
5. PMIR DIPLOMA - Evening Programme (6.30 pm to 8.30 pm)
This is a two-year evening course for post graduate students leading to a diploma granted by MSSW in Personnel Management and Industrial Relations. Started in 1978, the course imparts high professional training in personnel management and industrial relations by intensive coaching, case studies and extensive field work. The curriculum is focused on professional knowledge and accentuates development of specialized and effective skills and fosters attitudes essential for the students to grow into competent managers and responsible leaders.The two year programme is divided into 4 semesters each of six months duration. On completion of the programme the student will be awarded ‘The PG Honours Diploma in Personnel Management and Industrial Relations”. This diploma is recognized by the Govt. of Tamil Nadu and Karnataka for the purpose of employment. It has also been recognized by the Michigan State University, USA as conferring eligibility for admission to the final year of the MBA course of the University.
Admission
The minimum qualification for admission is a Bachelor’s degree in any discipline. As the programme is primarily intended for those already employed, preference will be given to applicants already working in Personnel, HRD Administration, Industrial Relations, Training and Development and allied functions. Industries may also sponsor candidates for training. Applicants fulfilling the stated requirement will also be called for entrance test and personal interview.
6. INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL FOR MANAGEMENT STUDIES (ISMS)
This center offers a one year full-time course at the end of which they will be awarded a diploma recognized by the Missouri State University, USA as eligibility to join the final year of the MBA programme of the University.. Students who enroll in this programme complete the first year at MSSW and move to the MSU in the second year.The mission of this two-year MBA program is to develop and sharpen the competitive managerial abilities of students so that they can excel in the global market place. The College of business Administration at MSU, where the candidates can pursue their second year programme, offers specialization in various areas like Accounting, Finance, Computer Information System, Marketing, Logistics, International Business etc.
Admission
For admission to this full-time one year course, the applicant must hold a Bachelor’s degree with a minimum 50 % of marks in any discipline or a professional qualification recognized as equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree by the Ministry of Education, Govt. of India.For admission into the final year MBA of MSU the candidates must fulfill the following requirements: GMAT composite score of at least 400 and 20th percentile or higher in verbal and analytical writing sections, TOEFEL computer based score at least 80 and successful completion of all the subjects during the one year at ISMS.Note: MSSW does not give any guarantee for getting of Visa or passing GMAT for students proceeding to MSU (USA) under 5 & 6 above.
7. RESEARCH PROGRAMMES – M.Phil. and Ph.D. in Social Work
The College offers full-time M.Phil programme in Social Work. For admission to the programme, candidates should have passed two year PG Degree course (with 55 % marks after 1991 and 50 % before 1991) after three year bachelor’s degree course and higher secondary of 12 years duration. Candidates who have passed PG degree examination with less than 17 years of course duration are not eligible for admission. The admission will be made on the basis of marks obtained by the candidates in the qualifying examination and marks scored in the entrance test.
The College offers both Full-time and Part-time (teacher & non-teacher) Ph.D programs. The candidate should have obtained a Master’s degree with not less than second class or equivalent grade or 50 % marks in the qualifying examination. The admission procedure will be according to University of Madras guidelines which can be obtained from the University office.
Application Forms
Application form, including copy of prospectus, for Graduate, Post Graduate and Diploma programmes can be obtained from the College office and the respective program offices during the month of May for all the Courses. Last date for receipt of completed application forms will be given in the Prospectus.
Application form for the Ph.D program has to be obtained from the University of Madras.
Special Features
Skill Development
Apart from regular classes, skill development classes (outside the academic syllabus) are offered conducted using external training experts for all courses in accordance with specific needs of the employment market. Self development, Interpersonal effectiveness and other life skills as well as specific professional skills are developed through these training programmes.
Campus Recruitment
Campus interviews by selected employers are facilitated by the College for job placement of students. The students are also trained to face interviews. Participation in the campus interview at the College will be restricted to those students who have been regular in College and field work and have participated actively in the activities of the College and have secured above 60 % marks in their internal and external examinations in all the semesters.
Infrastructural Facilities
Library
The College has a well stocked Library with over 12,000 books and several journals and periodicals. The Library is fully computerized and renders bar-coded services. Implementing the SDI system, the Library offers excellent support for students to prepare their assignments and project reports. The Library also offers photocopying facilities.
Computer Center
The College has a full-fledged computer with multi media computers, internet and printer facilities. Subject to the rules for each course, students can make use of the centre for email, internet browsing, word processing, creating presentations and data analysis. Students are also given basic orientation in use of computers and internet.
Hostel
Accommodation is available for men and women students separately in the Society’s hostel. Request for hostel accommodation shall be made in writing in the prescribed form available with the Warden.

CHENNAI: Students of the Madras School of Social Work on Wednesday staged a protest in front of the college in Egmore demanding better amenities.
The students said at least 20 students in the hostel were suffering from diarrhoea or fever as a result of the poor quality of drinking water. One of the students has been hospitalised, they said.
One of the hostel students, requesting anonymity, said a request for boiled water in the dining hall had been turned down.
“We were told we could buy water sachets if we wanted,” he said.
The students have also demanded additional drinking water facilities inside the college and provision of more toilets. “For about 450 students, there are only three toilets for men and three for women in the college,” a student said.
The college authorities said they would act on the demand for better facilities for water. However, the students said they wanted the assurance in writing and would continue the protest till then.
