Jim Fairchild is an American singer songwriter born in Fresno, California in 1973.

Biography

Fairchild moved to Modesto at the age of two, and began to play guitar at the age of 15. He currently lives and works in Portland, Oregon under the name All Smiles.

Jim Fairchild was the guitarist of the band Grandaddy until they broke up in 2006.. He is the most recent member of Grandaddy, joining before the band had released their first album. He is noted as having lived in Modesto, CA, Chicago, IL, Portland, OR and Los Angeles, CA.

He is featured on Giant Sand releases, Giant Sand Live at Rockefeller Music Hall [http://www.archive.org/details/gsand2001-03-04.flac16] , as well as the record Cover Magazine. In 2001 he toured with Giant Sand playing guitar opening shows for PJ Harvey.

Fairchld is credited as engineer on M.Ward release, To Go Home.

In 2006 Fairchild toured with Modest Mouse playing guitar before Johnny Marr joined the band.

The song was written shortly after Jim Fairchild gave an interview to the Chicago Reader discussing the storefront him and girlfriend, artist Natasha Wheat, were renovating in Chicago, as well as his new band All Smiles. Early in his career Oberst toured with Fairchild as Bright Eyes, opening shows for Grandaddy.
