Next constitution of Zimbabwe

The next constitution of Zimbabwe is to be promulgated within the 18 months following the end of political negotiations in September 2008; this places the earliest date around March 2010. It will formalize the political changes enacted since the negotiations, and it will be the second Zimbabwean constitution since the 1979 Constitution which was drafted through the Lancaster House Agreement.

A proposed new constitution to replace the 1979 document was approved by the Parliament in 1999, but was defeated by the electorate in the 2000 referendum that saw the rise to visibility of the Movement for Democratic Change. An alternative constitutional assembly, which had given rise to the MDC, was formed in 1997 to propose a new constitutional document, and is still active to the present.
