Florida Amendment 2 is a proposed amendment to the Constitution of Florida that would ban both same-sex marriage and civil unions in the state. The initiative is to go before voters in Florida on November 4th, 2008, with similar initiatives in Arizona and California.
Proposed constitutional amendments in Florida require 611,009 signatures, 8% of voters in the last presidential election, and 8% of voters in each congressional district of Florida are needed. The initiative was certified with 649,346 signatures and was placed on the ballot on February 2008. The text of Amendment 2 states “Inasmuch as marriage is the legal union of only one man and one woman as husband and wife, no other legal union that is treated as marriage or the substantial equivalent thereof shall be valid or recognized.”
Pubic Opinion
A Quinnipiac University poll on September 8, 2008 shows that 55% favor the proposed amendment, while 41% oppose it.
