- Hollingwood
Hollingwood is a small village approx. 4 miles NE of
Chesterfield ,Derbyshire ,England .Hollingwood, Barrow Hill was built in around 1900 when the formation of the Staveley Coal an Iron company formed, the houses were built for the workers of these company's. It is alledged that Hollingwood was the first village in the country to have hot running water via a ring main from a central boiler house in the village. This boiler house was shut down in the very early 1980's when gas and electric boilers were readily available.It is surrounded byBrimington ,Barrow hill andInkersall . Between Barrow hill and Hollingwood runs the Chesterfield Canal which is currently being re generated by the canal society. The canal house at Hollingwood has been granted planning permission for turning into a visitors centre. At the moment it is in a poor state of repair.It has a pub called the Hollingwood formerly known as Hollingwood Hotel. It also has a club called the BRSA club on Station rd. It is more commonly known as the 'railway club'. It did have another club called the 'Trough Lees' formerly known as the Lees builings. This is now boarded up and earmarked for housing.
It used to have a church called St.Francis Church on Cedar St, this is now a set of flats.
It has a small infant and junior school called Hollingwood Primary School.
The local post office has been earmarked for closure in Nov. 2008.
