Karabournaki

Karabournaki

Karabournaki (Greek: Καραμπουρνάκι), Mikro Karabournou (Μικρό Καραμπουρνού) or Mikro Emvolo (Μικρό Έμβολο), is the cape of Kalamaria and a district of the local municipality as well, south of downtown Thessaloniki. The name is from Turkish kara burun 'black peninsula'[1] + Greek -aki (diminutive).

Former Kodra Barracks

Karabournaki is an archaeological Excavation site, possibly of the ancient city of Therma. The site is located in the former Kodras Barracks area that occupies major part of the cape. The Barracks ground, belonging to the Ministry of National Defence is being claimed by the municipal government to be turned over to the local community and being used as a park.

The district

The most significant building of Karabournaki is the so-called Kyvernion (Governmental House) also called as "Palataki" (little Palace); which was the official residence of the King and Queen of Greece during their visits in Thessaloniki. Moreover, many Greek Presidents as well as other important personalities that have visited, have stayed there. Karabournaki, has two major streets: Themistokli Sofouli street which leads from Thessaloniki's Music Hall to Nea Krini and Taki Ekonomidi avenue which leads from the center of Kalamaria to downtown Thessaloniki.
