Ana María Martínez is an award-winning operatic soprano from Puerto Rico, known for her higher register and ability to reach into smooth, husky mezzo-soprano notes.

Career

Martínez made her debut in 1997 in the role of Solea in Penella's opera "El Gato Montes" with the Washington National Opera opposite Domingo.

She has appeared in "Don Giovanni" at Covent Garden, in "La Boheme" at the Vienna State Opera, in "La Traviata" at both Covent Garden and the Houston Grand Opera, and in "Elixir of Love" and "Roméo et Juliette", both in Houston. She has also appeared in "Simon Boccanegra" and in "Luisa Miller", both at the Paris Opera.

Martínez made her Metropolitan Opera debut in November 2005.

Awards

Martínez has has won prizes including the Pepita Embil Award, the Placido Domingo International Voice Competition, and first prize at the Eleanor McCollum Awards. Martínez won a Latin Grammy in 2001 for Classical Album for "Albeniz: Merlin" with Carlos Alvarez, Placido Domingo, Jane Henschel and conductor Jose De Eusebio with the Orquesta Sinfonica de Madrid.
