Ellis Lankster (born June 3, 1987 in Whistler, Alabama) is an American football cornerback and return specialist that plays for the West Virginia Mountaineers.

Early life

Ellis Lankster attended high school at C.F. Vigor High in Mobile, Alabama, where he played running back, receiver, and defensive for the football team. As a senior, Lankster scored on 19 rushing touchdowns and 5 receiving touchdowns and totaled 9 interceptions, finishing with 1,400 yards rushing. Lankster totaled nearly 5,000 all-purpose yards in his career and set the school record with 13 interceptions as a junior. Lankster also played basketball as a point guard.

Collegiate career

Junior college

Out of high school, Lankster signed with Mississippi State, however he was forced to go to a junior college due to his grades.

Lankster attended Jones County Junior College in Mississippi in 2005, where he was an All-American returner and an NJCAA all-region selection at cornerback. As a freshman, Lankster totaled five interceptions and two blocked field goals as he started all seven games. He finished his sophomore season with 62 tackles, six interceptions, and two blocked field goals. He also set a school-record with a 98-yard interception return for a score as a sophomore.

West Virginia

2007 season

Ellis Lankster signed with West Virginia University, and enrolled at WVU in January of 2007. He played in nine games his junior season, finishing with 16 tackles and an interception that was returned 22 yards. Lankster tallied four tackles against UConn, three against Mississippi State, and three tackles against ECU.

2008 season

Ellis Lankster returned to West Virginia in 2008 as the senior-starter at cornerback, with the graduation of Antonio Lewis and Vaughn Rivers, and the starting returner. In the season-opening victory over Villanova, Lankster recorded two tackles and returned a punt for 25 yards. In the following 24-3 loss to ECU, Lankster recorded a career-high six tackles but only three returns for 9 yards. In the following loss to the Colorado Buffaloes, Lankster recorded 11 tackles and had 3 punt returns for 64 yards. In the 27-3 win over Marshall, Lankster had one tackle and fumbled a punt return in West Virginia's redzone.
