History
The role was created in 1993 when the ancient post of Keeper of the Kings Swans (which dated from the 13th century) was replaced by two new posts; the other being the Warden of the Swans.
Role of the marker
The Marker of the Swans still participates in the annual activity of Swan Upping on the River Thames, but ironically the swans caught by him are not actually marked, unlike those caught by the two involved Livery Companies.[1]
Holders
The first office-holder is David Barber, appointed in 1993.
