- Roger Wolcott Richardson
Roger Wolcott Richardson (30 May 1930 – 15 June 1993) was a mathematician noted for his work in
representation theory andgeometry . He was born inBaton Rouge, Louisiana , and educated atLouisiana State University ,Harvard University andUniversity of Michigan, Ann Arbor where he obtained aPh.D . under the supervision ofHans Samelson . He emigrated in 1970, and subsequently worked in theUnited Kingdom andAustralia .Richardson’s best known result states that if "P" is a
parabolic subgroup of areductive group , then "P" has a dense orbit on itsnilradical , i.e., one whose closure is the whole space [R. W. Richardson, Jr, "Conjugacy Classes in Parabolic Subgroups of Semisimple Algebraic Groups" [http://dx.doi.org/10.1112/blms/6.1.21] , Bull. London Math. Soc., volume 6 (1974) 21–24.] . This orbit is now universally known as theRichardson orbit [G.I. Lehrer, " [http://www.science.org.au/academy/memoirs/richards.pdf Roger Wolcott Richardson 1930–1993] ", Historical Records of Australian Science, Volume 11 Number 4 (1997)] .ee also
