Wishaw General Hospital is a district general hospital in the Craigneuk area of Wishaw, North Lanarkshire. It is a 633-bedded hospital. It opened for business on 29th of May 2001. It has the second-largest Maternity unit in Scotland, delivering 5500 babies each year. The hospital also contains one of each of the following: a paediatric neonatal unit; an MRI scanner, elderly care and psychiatric day hospitals, and an emergency care unit containing an integrated accident and emergency unit with 36-bed ward.

It also has a 24-hour accident and emergency department.

Population

Wishaw General Hospital serves neighbouring towns such as Motherwell and Newmains, serving over 250,000 in NHS Lanarkshire. It is one of three acute hospitals in Lanarkshire, the others being Monklands Hospital in Airdrie and Hairmyres Hospital in East Kilbride.

There are three district general hospitals in the area - Wishaw General, Monklands and Hairmyres Hospital,East Kilbride. Each of these hospitals has an accident and emergency department and provides a range of specialist medical and surgical services. Maternity, gynaecology and paediatric services are based at Wishaw General Hospital.

Primary health care is provided in the community and includes general practitioners (GPs), dentists, pharmacists, health visitors and a wide range of health professionals. NHS Lanarkshire's primary care facilities include health centres and 17 community and day hospitals. There is one health centre in Kenilworth Avenue that could be demolished and rebuilt in the next few years.

NHS Lanarkshire employs more than 12,000 staff.

The centralisation of services to Wishaw General and Hairmyres has been discussed.
