Metro Local

Metro Local

Metro Local is a bus service in Los Angeles County, operated by the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority. This designation was placed to differentiate it from the Metro Rapid service. Metro Local buses cover both local, limited-stop, and shuttle bus services.

There are bus lines that are operated under contract with First Transit, Southland Transit, Transportation Concepts, and Laidlaw, mostly handling routes in the South Bay.

Route Numbers

Metro buses are given route numbers that indicate the type of service offered:
*1-99: Local Service to/from Downtown Los Angeles and other areas.
*100-199: East/West service in other areas, not necessarily Downtown L.A.
*200-299: North/South service in other areas.
*300-399: Limited-Stop service; mostly designated by just placing a 3 before a main route number (ex: Route 2, becomes Route 302); Many have been become Metro Rapid routes
*600-699: Shuttle, and special event services.

Farebox changes occurred after a few buses operated by Southland Transit had Metro's previous fareboxes that were not functioning.

First Transit formerly operated some buses that were owned by LACMTA (Flxible Metro and TMC/RTS) until 2001 when First Transit purchased their own fleet of buses. Currently, First Transit operates 40-foot Orion buses.
