"Karenia" is a genus of 12cite web | url = http://www.algaebase.org/search/genus/detail/?genus_id=45696 | title = Karenia | work = Algaebase ] species of dinoflagellates which were formerly included in the genus "Gymnodinium". [cite journal | author = Daugbjerg, N., Hansen, G., Larsen, J. & Moestrup, Ø | year = 2000 | title = Phylogeny of some of the major genera of dinoflagellates based on ultrastructure and partial LSU rDNA sequence data, including the erection of three new genera of unarmoured dinoflagellates | journal = Phycologia | volume = 39 | pages = 302–317 ]

A number of species cause red tides, including "Karenia brevis" off the coast of Florida and "Karenia mikimotoi" which was first described in Japan, but is now found in the Atlantic ocean as well, probably spread by ballast water.
