It is named after the
battle of Magenta , a battle fought on 4 June 1859 nearMagenta inItaly . It was a victory by thePiedmont ais of thekingdom of Piedmont-Sardinia and by the Frencharmée d'Italie under generalMac-Mahon andNapoléon III over the Austrians under Guylay.History
The boulevard de Magenta was one of the Hausmannian transformation of Paris. It was completed in
1855 betweenrue du Faubourg-Saint-Martin and theboulevard de Rochechouart (the boulevard here in fact follows the route of the old rue du Nord which formed part of an 1827 subdivision) and in1859 betweenplace de la République andrue du Faubourg-Saint-Martin .tations

The RER station Magenta is located to the east of the gare du Nord and named after this boulevard, even if it is not truly under it. It is served by ligne E du RER.

Jacques Bonsergent , the first Parisian to be shot by the Nazis during theGerman occupation of France , on 23 December 1940.
