refnum=79001648The First Presbyterian Church and Lewis Pintard House are landmark buildings located in the downtown section of New Rochelle,New York ,USA .John Russell Pope , architect of the nationalJefferson Memorial , designed this Colonial Revival-style church, which replaced the congregation’s original structure destroyed by fire. The Presbyterian Church had its origins in the French Church established by earlyHuguenot settlers. The adjoining minister’s home, one of New Rochelle’s oldest remaining houses, was constructed in part by Huguenot descendant Pierre Vallade in the late 1760s. Following Vallade’s death in 1770, his widow married Lewis Pintard, local businessman andRevolutionary War patriot who was appointed byGeorge Washington to be the Commissar for American prisoners in the City of New York during British control. His son, adopted from his deceased brother, founded theNew York Historical Society , served as secretary of theNew York Chamber of Commerce , and was elected first Sagamore of theTammany Society .The buildings were added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1979 and the New York State Register in 1980.
