Elahi Welfare Foundation

Elahi Welfare Foundation (EWF) is a Texas-based non-profit, charity organization formed on June 29, 2004. Its stated goals are to assist those in severe poverty around the world, specifically those in rural areas, by providing education and health care.

Among their activities, they provide free education (textbooks, food, school supplies, uniforms, scholarships, prizes etc.), manage adult literacy programs, offer financial aid for technical and higher education, improve science teaching in rural schools, and provide ambulance and advisory/counseling services.

EWF was originally established in the village of Tajik in Pakistan. Its subsidiary organization of the same name was founded in April, 2004 by Professor Dr. Bashir Ahmed Siddiqi, in memory of his late father Sheikh Amar Elahi. Dr. Siddiqi is a graduate of Punjab University (botany) and the University of London (molecular genetics, and has been on the faculty of, or a visiting lecturer at, University of Uppsala (Sweden), Peshawar University, Quaid-e-Azam University, and King Faisal University, and has more than 50 professional publications to his name. According to the EWF website, "Our mission and our vision come from the belief that without literacy, health and social welfare there can be no democracy." They also believe that combating poverty also combats radicalism, crime, and inequality, and encourages the growth of an educated, democratic middle class.
