Ryan attended college at Pepperdine University and was drafted by the Oakland Athletics in the 10th round of the amateur draft of 1995. He played 6 seasons in Major League Baseball with the Oakland Athletics (1998-2001), was traded to the Arizona Diamondbacks for the finish of the 2001 season, and one season each with the Milwaukee Brewers in 2002 and the Texas Rangers in 2003.
