oboe s,bassoon , 2 horns, strings and continuo, with an importantcello solo in the slow movement. [Landon (1955): 636. "2 ob., 2 cor., str., [ fag., cemb. ] . Vcl. solo in Andante."] As was becoming more common for Haydn, this symphony has four movements:* I. Allegro molto, 3/4
* II. Andante inD major , 2/4
* III. Menuetto e Trio: Allegretto, with the Trio inA minor , both 3/4
* IV. Allegro, 6/8The Andante was originally the finale of an early
divertimento "Der Geburtstag" (en. "Birthday") (Hob. II/11).HC Robbins Landon, Haydn: Chronicle and Works, 5 vols, (Bloomington and London: Indiana University Press, 1976-) v. 1, Haydn: the Early Years, 1732-1765]The trio of the Minuet features an oboe solo accompanied by violins and cello.
The finale is highly contrapuntal.
