Sid the Science Kid (originally Josh) uses music and humor to engage children to explore and discover the world around them. Sid, the main character, starts each episode with a question, such as "Why are my shoes shrinking?" and "Why do bananas get mushy?" [cite web |url= http://pbskids.org/sid/parentsandteachers/aboutTheProgram.html |title= Sid the Science Kid - Parents and Teachers|publisher= PBS Kids |accessdate= 2008-09-10 ] Throughout the show, Sid is joined by family, friends, and teachers, as he continually asks questions leading to the answer. Each week features a series of episodes centered on a theme, such as tools and measurement and the senses, ending with an episode that reviews the week's lessons.
Children are inquisitive by nature, which is part of the learning and scientific exploration encouraged by the show. Sid the Science Kid bases its conceptual content "in national science learning standards, cognitive learning theory, and on the preschool science curriculum, Preschool Pathways to Science" preparing them for school and helping them in everyday life.
