Symphony is a free and open source web publishing system written in PHP and MySQL. Based on MVC programming principles, the system's data and presentation layers are powered by the open standards XML and XSLT, respectively. Symphony provides complete separation between these layers, allowing developers full control over the system's outputs, whether they be XHTML, XML feeds, or any other kind of document.

Symphony is most often referred to as a content management system (CMS) or a content management framework, but it has some features in common with web application frameworks and can in fact be used to develop complex web applications. Despite these advanced capabilities, the system's administrative interface is fairly intuitive and accessible to non-programmers.

Development

In 2008, development began on Symphony version 2, which is currently in beta. Developers have provided a [http://sneakpeek.symphony21.com series of screencasts] to showcase the system's new features.
