The city was founded on February 1, 2005 from the merger of the towns of Neagari, Tatsunokuchi, and Terai, all from Nomi District.
Hideki Matsui, a current player for the Oakland Athletics, was born and raised in Neagari, and museum dedicated to him is located in Yamaguchi-machi.
