The Vallejo Estate, also known as Lachryma Montis, is an historic Carpenter Gothic house and grounds located on the corner of Spain and West 3rd streets in Sonoma, California. General Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo built it in 1851-1852 next to a free-flowing spring and its pool which had been named Chiucuyem (crying mountain) by the Indians and which Vallejo renamed to the rough Latin equivalent Lachryma Montis (mountain tear). On June 29, 1972, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places. It is also California Historical Landmark Number 4 and is part of the Sonoma State Historic Park.cite web|url=http://www.nr.nps.gov/|title=National Register Information System|date=2008-04-15|work=National Register of Historic Places|publisher=National Park Service] [ [http://www.napanet.net/~sshpa/genvalhome.htm General Vallejo's Home] ] [Tapper, Joan, "The Most Beautiful Villages and Toens of California", with photographs by Nik Wheeler, New York: Thames & Hudson, 2007, p. 67.
