High Speed Airport Rail Link, Bangkok, Thailand

High Speed Airport Rail Link, Bangkok, Thailand

Bangkok's standard gauge Airport Link will provide commuter service from the city to the Suvarnabhum Airport. The construction of the high-speed rail link and the City Airport Terminal in Makkasan are scheduled for completion in May 2009, after repeated delays. Construction began, July 2005. The mostly-elevated tracks run 28.6 km above existing railway right-of-way. Express service taking 15 minutes and City/Commuter trips taking 17 minutes. Maximum speed will be 160 km/h. However, the short distances on the City service mean that it will not actually reach that speed.

Germany's Siemens is building and supplying nine Desiro class trains. The first trains left for Thailand in September 2007. Testing began in 2008. The Express services will use four trains with city services wil consist of five three-car trains. As baggage may be checked before boarding the trains, a separate railway car is provided for baggage.

The line will be electrified at 25kV AC. Stations are being built for 10-car trains, and fitted with platform screen doors.

Until construction is complete in 2009,
