fictional character from the 1999 film "The Mummy" and its two sequels.Fictional biography
Jonathan is the bumbling older brother of Evelyn Carnahan-O'Connell. Like his sister, he is of Egyptian (
maternal ) and British (paternal ) descent. A drunk and a thief, Jonathan steals a map toHamunaptra , the city of the dead, from Rick O'Connell and presents it to his sister. This leads to he and Evy freeing Rick from prison and beginning their first adventure in Egypt, as chronicled in The Mummy. The character of Jonathan also returns for "The Mummy Returns ", ', and ', where he owns a night club in Shanghai named after Imhotep, the main antagonist in the previous two films. (This makes John Hannah the only actor besidesBrendan Fraser to have appeared in all three films.) In the animated series, Jonathan is voiced byTom Kenny .Jonathan is not the standard hero, like Rick; he is strongly motivated by greed and the desire for treasure. Nevertheless, he does care for his sister Evy, and is very close with her son, his nephew, Alex. He can also hold his own in a gunfight; as he tells
Ardeth Bay in "The Mummy Returns ", he was the Fox and Hounds Grand Champion three times, though the novelization hints that he probably lied as he dropped the rifle after making the claim saying "Of course, that was in my prime." Jonathan often provides the comic relief in tense situations, and directorStephen Sommers has stated that Jonathan learned nothing from his adventure in the first film. At the end of the third film, Jonathan moves to Peru, where he doesn't think there will be any mummies (though he is quickly proven wrong). It is interesting to note that, as a running gag, Jonathan tends to survive from otherwise life-threatening experiences and often comes off with a bit of treasure at the near end of the film
