This became a generic term for the Moroccans working outside their country, in the geographical space belonging to the European Union. The biggest communities may be found in Spain and in France.

In 2008, the Spanish authorities reported a number of 700,000 Moroccans as legal residents in Spain. However, it is believed that the real number of Moroccans workers in that country is much bigger, as they come as illegal immigrants and work mainly in the underground economy, especially in agriculture and constructions.

The Moroccans working abroad are making an important impact on Moroccan budget. In 2007, Six billion euros were transferred to Morocco from abroad, by the workers who wanted to support their families at home.
