- Clearance gauge
A Clearance is the distance between a roll and a chuck on a
can seamer used to form adouble seam in a can - sealing the the lid (End) to the can body such as in paint, beverage or food cans. The lid (End) should be of metal while the body can be ofmetal (beverage, soup, etc.),paper (whiskey cans) orplastic .The clearance gauge is a device replacing the older feeler gauge technique for ensuring that the roll and chuck are in their correct respective positions.
The clearance gauge is inserted into a double seamer head and is able to provide real time information about the relative position of the roll and the chuck, allowing the operator to adjust their position without actually having to try the results out on actual cans.
Previously, many companies used feeler gauges, small pieces of metal which provide a go/no-go solution, but one that requires both vast eperience in correcting mistakes and it very time consuming. Companies utilized final product testing, without realizing that these can be misleading - due to the
springback effect which causes a seam that was closed too tightly to open up after a while, causing the seam to appear too loose...Applications
Some common applications include, but are not limited to:
* Beverage Cans
* Aerosol Cans
* Food cans
* Automotive Filters (oil and fuel)
* Capacitors
* Certain Automotive Mufflers (Silencers)
