- HMS Antigua (1804)
The third HMS "Antigua" was a
prison ship that served in the BritishRoyal Navy from 1804 to 1816."Antigua" previously had served as the French
privateer "Egyptienne", a 36-gun ship with a crew of 120 based atBordeaux . On23 March 1804 , the British 18-gunsloop HMS "Osprey" badly damaged "Egyptienne" in a close, 80-minute action nearBarbados before "Egyptienne" used her superior speed to escape. [Clowes, p. 341; Colledge, p. 251.] On25 March 1804 [According to Colledge, p. 34] or27 March 1804 [According to Clowes, p. 342] the British 14- [According to Clowes, p. 342] or 18- [According to Colledge, p. 34] gun sloop HMS "Hippomenes" captured the damaged "Egyptienne" after a 54-hour chase followed by a three-hour, 20-minute action. [Clowes, p. 342; Colledge, p. 171]The Royal Navy took "Egyptienne" into British service as HMS "Antigua". "Antigua" served as a prison ship until she was scrapped in 1816. [Colledge, p. 34]
