Standard upper ontology (SUO) is a IEEE P1600.1 term for a near-universal upper ontology (or foundation ontology).

The following ontologies are now competing to be used as the foundation for standard:
* IFF Foundation Ontology
* Suggested Upper Merged Ontology
* OpenCyc
* Lattice of Theories including the above and
* A 4D ontology based on ISO 15926.
* The Multi-Source Ontology (MSO) brings together some of these in a practical environment.

The real progress of the standard development and discussion can be monitored at [http://ontolog.cim3.net/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?UpperOntologySummit Upper Ontology Summit] and in this [http://suo.ieee.org/email/thrd1.html IEEE 1600.1 SUO email archive] .
