My Friend Dahmer

"My Friend Dahmer" is a comic book created and self-published by artist John "Derf" Backderf. It depicts the author's friendship with serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer during his time at Revere High School. Backderf, while not excusing Dahmer's crimes, presents Dahmer as a kid who was tormented and neglected. [http://www.citypaper.com/arts/review.asp?rid=5110] The comic recalls Dahmer being picked on, suffering from substance abuse, behaving strangely to get attention, and torturing and killing animals. John Backderf shows moments where he and his friends encouraged Dahmer's acting out, including his imitation of a cerebral palsy victim. [http://www.derfcity.com/crap/jd1.html] One technique of Derf's was drawing Jeffrey Dahmer in shadow, as a representation of his personality.
