Career
Before becoming an actor in the Tamil film industry, Manoj worked as an assistant director. He did a course in Theatre arts at the University of South Florida.[1]
He made his acting debut in the 1999 Tamil film Taj Mahal, directed by his father himself alongside Riya Sen, who made her debut as well. Subsequently Manoj appeared in films like Samuthiram alongside Sharath Kumar and Murali and Kadal Pookkal, directed by his father, sharing screen space with Murali once again. The films, though became box office bombs, received much critical acclaim, especially the latter, for which Bharathiraja was awarded the National Film Award for Best Screenplay. He then enacted lead roles in Alli Arjuna, Varushamellam Vasantham and Pallavan, which all failed to achieve commercial success. Later, he starred in Sathyaraj's Maha Nadigan in a cameo role and did a negative role in the Telugu film Lemon.[2]
He worked as an assistant to his father in films like Bommalattam and noted filmmaker Mani Ratnam in Bombay. Currently he is working as an assistant to director S. Shankar in his forthcoming magnum opus Enthiran.[3] Recently it was said, that Manoj is also going to direct a film very soon, on which he is working now.
Personal life
On November 19, 2006, Manoj married his longtime girlfriend actress Nandhana, who has appeared in Tamil films as ABCD and Success.[4] Nandhana was his co-star in the film Saadhuriyan. The marriage was held at Ashirwad Marriage Hall at Kozhikode, Kerala, homeplace of Nandhana, whilst a grand reception took place on December 1, 2006 at Mayor Ramanathan Chettiar Hall in Chennai, Tamil Nadu.[5] On December 9, 2007, Nandhana gave birth to a girl.[6]
