Kaya is a city in the middle south of Sudan on the border to Uganda lying 77 km away from Yei the regional headquarters of the SPLA for Central Equatoria state, formerly part of the province of Equatoria

History

Kaya was located in the onbattled region of the Second Sudanese Civil War and was conquered on march the 10th 1997 by the SPLA.

Demographics

There are no exact numbers about the population of Kaya because of the civil war.

Economy

Because of the civil war the infrastructure, trade and industry are only weakly developed. But in the course of peace-agreement between the Sudanese government in Khartoum and the SPLA there are first signals of economic recovery.

So the road between Kaya and Yei was repaired. It was financed by HABITAT and WFP. With it the travel time to Yei was reduced from 5 hours to 1 hour.
