Alliance of the periphery

Alliance of the periphery

Alliance of the periphery or "periphery doctrine" was a strategic principle advanced by David Ben Gurion - the state of Israel's first prime minister - holding that Israel should seek alliances with the non-Arab states of the Middle East periphery in order to counteract the hostility of bordering Arab states. Turkey and pre-revolutionary Iran were two such "peripheral" states Israel had good relations with. According to author Trita Parsi, the doctrine led to a questionable attempts by Israel to establish good relations with the avowidly anti-zionist Islamic Republic of Iran after the Islamic Revolution overthrew the Shah of Iran. Parsi quotes professor David Menashri of Tel Aviv University, "Israel's foremost expert on Iran," as saying, `Throughout the 1980s, no one in Israel said anything about an Iranian threat - the word wasn't even uttered.` [Parsi, Trita "Treacherous Alliance" (2007), p.104]

Periphery Nations
