Newman Student Union

Newman Student Union is a charitable organisation that exists to represent its members, the students of Newman University College. Newman Student Union offers representation for students undertaking academic degrees and teacher training in Birmingham, England. Representation is available on every level, right from individual representation where students need to meet with a member of staff face to face, right through Newmans’ Committees and Board of Governors encompassing to the National Union of Students and to the Government, to ensure that students rights and needs are always considered when changes are made to the education system, be it on a national level or within a Newman module.

As well as Representation NSU also has many other activities, which include supporting our student groups such as Sports Teams, Societies, Raise and Give (RAG) group who run fundraising activities for charitable courses throughout the year, students who give up their time to support our executive such as student course representatives and committee members. We also run a Student Information and Advice Centre which is staffed by students who volunteer their time and act as a signpost to help students with problems or issues they may need help or guidance with.

NSU is also involved with Entertainments, supporting the Sanctuary Bar and running our own events (such as Christmas and Summer Balls), which are usually very popular, Awards evenings and ‘Stars in the Bar’ – a talent show that always draws a large crowd. If a student wants to be proactive then Newman Student Union does their best to meet their needs.

Student Union Executive

The constitution of Newman Student Union requires that they are run by democratically elected Officers who serve in one year terms running from July 1st to June 30th. NSU also offers those Student Officers specific training to ensure that students gain extra-curricular skills and experience through their time at Newman to prepare them for the work-place.

The Student Union is also assisted by independent members of the Student Union who in their capacity of their Union roles must remain impartial. These members are the Chair of the Student Council and the Vice-Chair of Student Council as well as the Student Governor who sits upon the Board of Governors as the student's representative.
