There are around 650 Indians in Chile. They are mainly business men and are recent immigrants. However, some Indians arrived as early as the 1920s and another period in 1974 to 1989. The main residence of Indian-Chileans is in
Santiago .Also note that Indian is literally "indio" in Spanish but the term "hindú" is often used, not for the religion, which is "hinduista", as "indio" is a derogatory word for an Amerindian person in most
Latin American Spanish dialects. Most Indian-Chileans are Catholic Christians with large Hinduist, Muslim and Buddhist minorities, while the majority speak Spanish and in addition to English, Hindi and other Indian languages.
