History

Sedma [Oxford Dictionary of Card Games by David Parlett - pg: 253, 254] , the Czech word for “Seven” is a trick-taking card game of Bohemian origin for four players with rules both simple and highly unusual. It is closely related to the Finnish game Ristiklappi, "Ristikontra" (Cross-clap), the Hungarian game Zsírozás (Greasing) and the Polish game Hola, which is a Ukrainian word meaning "Naked".

The game made its way to Czech Republic in the 60's through the Slovak Republic, Hungary or Russia, and quickly spread around the country being one of the most played games at the time, together with Prší, czech word for "It's raining", related to the Rummy game Mau Mau, and Žolík.

The Deal

A german-suited 32-card deck is used and cards rank A 10 K Q J 9 8 7 in each suit. The Dealer may The game is twelve deals and players sitting opposite each other are partners. This partnership changes after every four deals, although each player plays for himself. The aim of the game is to win Aces and 10s in tricks, each counting 10 points. A further 10 for winning the last trick makes 90 so as to prevent ties. All Sevens, known as "Sedmičky", are trumps.be chosen by any agreed means and deals eight cards each, one at a time.

The Play

Eldest leads first and the winner of each trick leads to the next. The trick is taken by the last card of the same rank as the one led or by the last Seven, if any are played. Any card may be played, so that suit need not be followed.

Examples

# 9 J A Q: the Nine wins a trick worth 10 for the Ace.

# J J A 10: the second Jack wins a trick worth 20.

# 9 7 K 10: the Seven trumps a trick worth 10.

# A 7 7 10: the second Seven wins a trick worth 20.

# 7 7 7 7: the last-played Seven wins.

Each player scores the points made by his own partnership and the winner is the player with the highest score after twelve deals.

Sedma for Two

Dealer is chosen, deals four cards each and stack the rest face down. Non-dealer leads first and Dealer next, playing any card or trumping the one led.
#If he fails to match or trump he may say “Pass”, but Non-dealer wins the trick without further play.

#If he does match or trump, Non-dealer must himself either match or trump because, unlike his opponent, he may not play a losing card.
#If he passes then, Dealer wins the trick which may contain any number of cards.

The trick is taken by the last played card of the same rank or by the last played Seven if any are played and the game continues until all cards have been played.

Each in turn, starting with the winner, then draws from the stock until both players have four cards again and the previous trick winner leads to the next. This continues until the stock is exhausted and all cards have been played.

Sedma for Three

Two 8s are removed from the deck, so that the number of cards may match the number of players. If one of the players has the Zelený Král (K♣), a temporary partnership is formed and two of the players will play againt the third preventing him from reaching 50 points, thus winning the game. The three possible scores are:

#Simple Victory - Between 50 and 80 points = 1 Crown
#Victory for 90 - The player reached 90 Points, but didn't win all the tricks. = 2 Crowns
#Victory for Tricks - The player reached 90 Points, winning all the tricks = 3 Crowns.

*This type of victory is related to the fact that players usually played for money.
