She was born in
Washington, DC and was trained to be a teacher atWilson Teachers College . DuringWorld War II she worked at theNational Bureau of Standards as aspectrometer technician. In 1945 she and her first husband, Clarence D. Gurewitz, divorce. She then marriedMorton Sobell and they stayed married until 1980. She and her husband both worked at theGeneral Electric Company inSchenectady, New York . She studied physics at theRensselaer Polytechnic Institute . After moving toNew York City in 1947, she was awarded a master's degree atColumbia University in 1950. After being accused of spying, she and her husband and two children fled to Mexico. They were abducted, taken to the United States border and turned over to theFederal Bureau of Investigation . After serving her sentence, she taught science at theElisabeth Irwin High School (she left after her husband was released) and studied system theory and received aPh.D. in computer education fromTeachers College, Columbia University in 1972. cite news |first= |last= |authorlink= |coauthors= |title=Helen L.
