Stagecoach's first presence in the North East of England came with the acquisition of Busways in July

Operates from two depots in the city,
Slatyford andWalkergate . Newcastle provides local services around the city. Newcastle also operates the 100MetroCentre shuttle, running from Blackett Street via Central Station to the Metrocentre. The service is operated with fiveAlexander Dennis Enviro300s. Also operated areQuayLink services linking Newcastle and Gateshead Quaysides, using hybrid electric buses. Stagecoach in South Shields
Stagecoach is the largest operator of local services in South Shields. The depot is in the Chichester area of the town, known locally as Chi. All services pass through South Shields Market (except the X34). As well as an extensive network of local services South Shields is also the only depot to connect to the other two Busways divisions. E1, E2 and E6 services operate from
South Shields Market toSunderland Park Lane Interchange via Whitburn. The E in the service number stands for Economic, the company that was taken over in 1975 by TWPTE. Economic ran services from South Shields to Sunderland. The newly acquired Busways company was a key participant in the
Darlington Bus War , which ended with a new Stagecoach presence inDarlington . The "Stagecoach Darlington" company later passed from Busways to Transit.On
9th May 2007 it was announced byArriva North East a conditional deal with Stagecoach to take over the Darlington division, providing theOffice of Fair Trading did not refer to deal to theCompetition Commission . In the deal Arriva would merge its current Darlington operation with Stagecoach's and use the current Stagecoach Darlington depot in Faverdale.On
22nd August 2007 the OFT announced it was not to refer the sale to the Competition Commission. On the same day Stagecoach announced the deal would be going ahead. On23rd August 2007 Arriva announced it was to take over Stagecoach Darlington's operations on26th August 2007 .External links
