Ian Grenville Cross, SC, JP (江樂士) (born 15 June 1951) was appointed
Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) ofHong Kong, China , on 15 October 1997. Prior to that, he had, since 1991, been the Deputy DPP, specialising in appellate advocacy. He was appointed asQueen’s Counsel in 1990, and becameSenior Counsel in 1997, following the reunification of Hong Kong with China.He was educated at
Culford School and graduated in law fromSouthampton University , where he chaired theConservative and Unionist Association , in 1973. He was called to the Bar of England and Wales by theMiddle Temple , of which he was a Blackstone Entrance Exhibitioner, in 1974, and to the Bar of Hong Kong in 1981. Prior to his appointment as a public prosecutor in 1976, he practiced on the South Eastern Circuit, from the chambers ofJeffrey Thomas, QC, MP . He joined the Attorney General’s Chambers (now theDepartment of Justice ) of Hong Kong as Crown Counsel in 1978.Cross, who was appointed Adjunct Professor of Law,
China University of Political Science and Law , Beijing, in 2004, is the author of Sentencing in Hong Kong, Sentencing Editor of Archbold Hong Kong, General Editor of the Criminal Appeals Bulletin and Associate Editor of the Hong Kong Cases.He has served as Chairman of the Committee on Information Technology in Courts, Chairman of the Committee on Costs in Criminal Proceedings and Chairman of the Committee on the Evidence of Children in Criminal Proceedings.
Cross was elected to the Executive Committee of the
