- Parents Anonymous
Parents Anonymous (PA) is a
self-help group for parents who have abused children. It was founded in1967 by a 29 year-old single mother, Jolly K. and psychiatric social worker Leonard L. Lieber. Jolly K. was under Lieber's care at the time, and he suggested she meet with another abusing parent from his caseload. The organization grew slowly until it received a grant from the Office of Child Development and Health Education and Welfare in 1974. Unlike traditionaltwelve-step programs PA mandates professional involvement and accepts funding from outside sources, but does emphasize the importance of protecting members anonymity.cite journal |last=Gartner |first=Alan |title=Self-help and mental health |journal=Social Policy |volume=7 |issue=2 | year=1976 |pages=28-40 |pmid=10316986] The PA "Chapter Development Manual" requires each chapter have professional sponsor who "should be a professional person in the mental health field with a profound respect for the self-help concept."cite book |author=Parents Anonymous |title=Parents Anonymous chapter development manual |publisher=Parents Anonymous |location=Torrance, CA |year=1974 |oclc=37659500] Parents Anonymous publishes a periodical, "Frontiers",cite journal |author=Parents Anonymous |title=Frontiers |oclc=7324294 |location=Inglewood, CA |publisher=Parents Anonymous] and several manuals in addition to the "Chapter Development Manual".Worldcat [http://www.worldcat.org/search?q=au%3AParents+Anonymous.&qt=hot_author search results list 48 books by Parents Anonymous] ]References
