Inter-Provincial Amateur Hockey Union

Inter-Provincial Amateur Hockey Union

The Inter-Provincial Amateur Hockey Union (IPAHU) was the premier amateur ice hockey league in Canada after the split between the amateur and professional ice hockey teams of the Eastern Canadian Amateur Hockey Association (ECAHA) in 1908.

History

The IPAHU was founded in 1908 to separate the competition between the professionals of the ECAHA and the amateurs. The teams began play in January 1909 with a four-team league of Montreal's Victorias and Montreal AAA, Ottawa's Cliffsides and Toronto's AAC. Toronto AAC would continue play in the Ontario Hockey Association senior series as well. [cite news |work=The Globe |title=Advancement of Amateurism |page=7 |date=December 28, 1908]

In February 1909, it was announced that a new championship trophy for Canadian amateur teams was donated by Sir Montague Allan. The new Allan Cup was given to the Montreal Victorias of the IPAHU as the premier amateur team. Ottawa Cliffsides were IPAHU champions and became Allan Cup champions as well. The Cliffsides would lose the Allan Cup in a challenge to Queen's College of Kingston, Ontario.
