Anthony Ashley-Cooper, 9th Earl of Shaftesbury

Anthony Ashley-Cooper, 9th Earl of Shaftesbury, KP, GCVO, CBE, PC (31 August 1869 – 25 March 1961) was a British peer, the son of Anthony Ashley-Cooper, 8th Earl of Shaftesbury.

He married Lady Constance Grosvenor (22 August 1875 – 8 July 1957), daughter of Victor Grosvenor, Earl Grosvenor, on 15 July 1899. They had four children:

*Major Anthony Ashley-Cooper, styled Lord Ashley (4 October 1900 – 8 March 1947), married 1stly 1927 (div 1934) Sylvia Hawkes, actress born Edith Louisa Hawkes (1904-1977), as her first husband (of five husbands), and secondly Françoise Soulier and had issue, one son and one daughter, by his second wife. The late 10th Earl of Shaftesbury (murdered 2004) was his only son, and the late 11th Earl (1977-2005) and the present 12th Earl (b. 1979) his grandsons. There are no heirs to the earldom.
*Lady Mary Sibell Ashley-Cooper (3 October 1902 – 2 August 1936), married Napier Sturt, 3rd Baron Alington of Crichel and had issue.
*Lady Dorothea Louise Ashley-Cooper (b. 29 April 1907), married Anthony Head, 1st Viscount Head and had issue.
*Major The Hon. (Anthony) John Percy Hugh Michael Ashley-Cooper (5 October 1915 – 1986), married Julian Petherick; four daughters

Lord Shaftesbury was Lord Lieutenant of Belfast from 1904 to 1911, Lord Lieutenant of Antrim from 1911 to 1916, Lord Lieutenant of Dorset from 1916 to 1952, and Lord Steward from 1922 to 1936.

He died in 1961 and his titles passed to his grandson, Anthony Ashley-Cooper, Lord Ashley.
