George Lindbeck (born 1923) is a
Lutheran theologian . Though most recently associated withpostliberal theology , he first gained attention as amedievalist and as a participant in ecumenical dialogues. His best know work is "", published in 1984.Early life and education
Lindbeck was born in 1923 in Luoyang, China, the son of Lutheran missionaries. Raised in that country and in
Korea , he attendedGustavus Adolphus College , graduating with a BA in 1943. He went on to do graduate work atYale University , receiving his BD in 1946 and his PhD in 1955. He concentrated on medieval studies, delivering a dissertation on work ofJohn Duns Scotus after research withÉtienne Gilson andPaul Vignaux of Toronto and Paris.He was appointed to the
Yale Divinity School faculty in 1952 before his studies were finished, and remained there until his retirement in 1993.References
