The Vancouver Folk Music Festival takes place every third weekend of July. Founded in 1977, this annual festival uses eight outdoor stages, located at Jericho Beach Park on the west side of Vancouver, British Columbia.

In the past it has attracted artists from all over the world and from all walks of life, including Ani Difranco, Utah Phillips, Tuvan Throat singers, Sarah Harmer, Veda Hille, Feist, K'naan, and Ferron, among many others. In recent years, the festival has added more hip-hop and spoken word to the standard collection of singer-songwriters and ethnic musicians.

Historically, the VFMF has eschewed corporate sponsorship, which has led to various unusual advertising gimmicks on the part of companies not related to or supported by the VFMF but wishing to take advantage of a large "captive audience" (most notoriously, advertising planes buzzing festival-goers with low-level bannered fly-bys).

The VFMF is produced with the help of over 1,000 volunteers each year, and attracts an audience that averages between 10,000 to 30,000, depending on the weather, popularity of featured artists, competition from other festivals, and other factors.

2008

Held from July 18-20, 2008, the 31st edition of the VFMF included such acts as Michael Franti & Spearhead, Master Musicians of Jajouka, Ozomatli, Aimee Mann, Kiran Ahluwalia, Etran Finatawa, Markus James and the Wassonrai, Jorane (cancelled) and Eneida Marta.
