Project Management Skills

Managing projects requires a unique and special set of skills. Whilst many people learn about managing projects by completing a training course, it takes a number of years of experience to hone the skills that differentiate between the project manager who has a licence to drive and those that are grand prix winners.

To be an outstanding project manager, you need to possess not only the traditional skills of planning, scheduling, managing budgets and resources, but also a range of interpersonal or 'soft' skills, including motivating and leading teams, negotiation, decision making, professional presentation and writing skills, just to name a few.

The Australian Institute of Project Management [http://www.aipm.com.au] identified a range of interpersonal and business skills as part of the competency standards for project management [http://www.aipm.com.au/html/ncspm.cfm]

The Project Management Institute [http://www.pmi.org] Project Management Body of Knowledge outlines a range of skills required for effective and competent project managers.

Both of these organisations offer certification programmes, however, these programmes do not adequately assess or are a reliable measure of an individual project manager's interpersonal skills.
