Alexandrina Pendatchanska

Alexandrina Pendatchanska ( _bg. Александрина Пендачанска) [Although over many different sources her latinized last name is spelled, sometimes, as "Pendachanska", it is not quite correct, and should be spelled "Pendatchanska" instead. (Cyrilic letter "ч" is prononced as "tch", similarly as in Tchaikovsky (NOT "Chaikovsky"!) Besides, her own professional Web-page uses correct transcription.] ; born 1970 in Sofia, Bulgaria, is the dramatic coloratura soprano of world renown. She studied piano since early childhood, later graduated from National School of Music in piano and singing (her vocal teacher was her own mother, Valerie Popova).

She made her stage debut at age 17 in the role of Violetta in La Traviata. Soon after she started to win in various international singing competitions: Antonín Dvořák Competition in Karlovy Vary, second prize in International Vocal Competition in Bilbao (1988), and the first prize in UNISA in Pretoria (1990). Her debut outside Bulgaria took place in Bilbao, where she sung title role in Lucia di Lammermoor.

Since 1989 she sings in many of the most prestigious opera houses around the world, including Vienna, Paris, Berlin, New York (The City Opera), Rome, Brussels, Washington, Hamburg, Moscow, Turin, Naples, Santa Fe, Bregenz, Monte Carlo, Pezaro, Tel Aviv, and many others.

She made particular impression when singing title role in "Esclarmonde" at Teatro Regio in Turin in November 1992 (that performance was taped and issued on VHS and later on DVD), at that time being just barely of age 22, thus closely matching (by age) similar debut of Sybil Sanderson in that same role.

During the 1997-2001 operatic seasons Aleksandrina Pendachanska sung the role of Elizabeta in "Roberto Devereux" (Turin, Naples), "Ermione" (Santa Fe), Adina in "L'Elisir d'Amore" (Pesaro), one of the sisters in "Suor Angelica " (Luke), "Luisa Miller" (Naples).

Her other operatic roles include:

* The Queen of the Night in "The Magic Flute" by Mozart (Cape Town)
* Ophelia in "Hamlet" (Monte Carlo, Vienna);
* Lucia (Turin, Trieste);
* Gilda in "Rigoletto" (National Opera of Wales, Monte Carlo);
* Violetta in "La Traviata" (Trieste, Hamburg, Frankfurt);
* Adalgisa in "Norma" (Teatro del Opera di Roma);
* Parisina in "Parisina" (Wexford, Lugano );
* La Donna del Lago (New York City Opera).

Current repertoire of Aleksandrina Pendachanska includes also roles of Donna Anna and Donna Elvira from "Don Giovanni (Lausanne, Houston, Lisbon, Prague, Baden-baden, Innsbruck), Vitellia in "La Clemenza di Tito" (Santa Fe, Lyon, Madrid), and Elettra in "Idomeneo" (Bruxelles). Besides activity on the stage, she also participates in various concert programs around the world, including music festivals. In them her vast repertoire includes also "Requiem by Verdi, "Stabat Mater" by Rossini, "Le Roi David" by Honegger.

Discography of Aleksandrina Pendachanska is also very impressive. She participated in recording of operas by Glinka, Donizetti and Verdi, some of them issued in DVD format.
