In 2006 it had a population of 449.The village was established on 15 May 1948, the day after the Israeli declaration of independence with the intention of guarding the sole road between the centre of the country and the
Negev . The founders were immigrants fromEgypt , though today most residents are immigrants fromBrazil .It was named for a
Jew ish settlement in the area from the era of theSecond Temple , possibly a station for soldiers' inquiries. There was also an Arab village namedBrur in the area.External links
