- Symphony No. 30 (Haydn)
The Symphony No. 30 in
C major (Hoboken I/30) is a festivesymphony [Antony Hodgson, "The Music of Joseph Haydn: The Symphonies". London: The Tantivy Press (1976): 57 - 58. The author places this symphony in Chapter 2, "The Early Festive Symphonies"] byJoseph Haydn . The symphony was composed in 1765. It is sometimes called the Alleluia Symphony because of the use of a GregorianAlleluia chant. This Alleluia chant is sometimes confused with the melody in the finale of Mozart's Symphony No. 41 in C major. [Peter Brown, "Eighteenth-Century Traditions and Mozart's "Jupiter" Symphony K.551" "The Journal of Musicology" 20 2 (2003): 187, footnote 65.] Mozart did use this Alleluia chant melody for his Alleluia Canon, K. 533, written shortly after he completed his C major symphony.HC Robbins Landon, Haydn: Chronicle and Works, 5 vols, (Bloomington and London: Indiana University Press, 1976-) v. 1, Haydn: the Early Years, 1732-1765]The work is scored for
flute , [Hodgson (1976): 58. "Haydn adds a flute in the slow movement and in the first of the two Trios of the Minuet-Finale. Clearly it requires a separate performer, since at one point it plays together with the two oboes; why he should have to remain silent throughout the first movement is, however, rather a puzzle."] twooboe s,bassoon , two horns, trumpet s,timpani , [H. C. Robbins Landon, "The Symphonies of Joseph Haydn". London: Universal Edition & Rockliff (1955): 661. "Pts. for 2 clarini (trpts.) and timp. possibly authentic (as yet no copies of these pts. have been found."] and strings with continuo. The work is in three movements:
