The Friends School of Portland is an independent pre-K through 8 Friends (Quaker) school located on Mackworth Island in Casco Bay.
The school is independent, non-profit, and tax-exempt. Over half of the Board members are active attenders and members of a Quaker meeting. The school is the brain-child of founding teacher Mary Tracy who still teaches language arts and math to grades 5-8.
The first school year for Friends School of Portland began in the fall of 2006. James E. Grumbach, Jr. became Head of School in the fall of 2007. Grumbach joined FSP in 2007. He had been a teacher and administrator for 29 years at George School. He also served on the school committee for Newtown Friends School.
