Kannauj at the end of the11th century , filling the political vacuum that had been created after that city was sacked byMahmud of Ghazni in1018 . Chandradeva soon expanded the kingdom to includeDelhi ,Ayodhya , andVaranasi (Benares). During the rule of his successor Govindachandra (1114 -1154 ), the Gahadvala state reached the pinnacle of its power, occupying much of present-dayUttar Pradesh andBihar . Govindachandra moved his capital fromKannauj toVaranasi . His queen Kumaradevi was a devoutBuddhist , and Govindachandra was a patron of both Hindu temples and Buddhist monasteries.

Jaichand was destined to be the last Gahadvala king ofKannauj . The city was sacked byMuhammad of Ghor in1194 ; Jaichandra subsequently drowned in theGanges ; his kingdom conquered by Muhammad's armies. The historians question the historicity of the account given in
Prithviraj Raso .According to some accounts, some survivors, led by Jaichand's son or grandson Siyaji, are said to have fled west to the
Marwar desert region ofRajasthan , where they established themselves as rulers in the early13th century , founding theRathor clan which ruled theprincely state ofJodhpur . However olderRashtrakuta inscriptions exist at Hathundi in Rajasthan, suggesting that the Rathors were present in the Bikaner region before the arrival of Siyaji.Remaining families moved southward fighting battles and conquering territory toward Vindhyachal and settled in the Ganges belt forming three principal dynasties, Dahiya, Manda, and Vijaypur currently in Allahabad and Mirzapur districts of Uttar Pradesh. Important princely towns in these states are those of Dohtha, Chaphla, and Halia.
