Carroll Vincent Newsom was born
February 23 ,1904 inBuckley, IL . Newsom received aB.A. from theCollege of Emporia in 1924, a M.A. from theUniversity of Michigan in 1927 and aPh.D. in 1931.His
academic career began as amathematics instructor at theCollege of Emporia in 1924, at Michigan (1927-1928) and theUniversity of New Mexico (1928-1929 ). He was appointed assistantprofessor there in 1929, associate professor in 1931, and professor in 1933, and served as Head of the Department from 1931-1944. He was Professor of Mathematics and Chairman of the Science Division atOberlin College from 1944-1948.From 1944-1955, he was Assistant Commissioner for Higher Education, then Associate Commissioner for Higher and Professional Education, for the
State of New York . Newsom was appointed Executive Vice President in 1955 atNew York University and served as 11th NYU President from 1956-1962. Newsom was President ofPrentice Hall , Inc. from 1964-1965 and Director ofNBC from 1961-1971, serving as Vice President from 1966-1969.Newsom died
